ACT 1 SCENE 1

CHARLIE is lying in her bed, stage left, and ANXIETY 1 is sitting in a chair next to her. CHARLIE is trying to sleep.

There is a spotlight on them.

ANXIETY 1

Did you lock the door?

CHARLIE

Of course.

ANXIETY 1

Are you sure? You live in a bad neighborhood you should probably check.

CHARLIE

I locked it.

ANXIETY 1

Turned off the stove?

CHARLIE

I had a microwave dinner.

ANXIETY 1

Still.

Pounding on a door and police sirens off stage.

CHARLIE

What was that?

ANXIETY 1

Sounds like someone is looking for you.

CHARLIE sits up and pulls the blanket off.

ANXIETY 1 (CONT’D)

Where are you going?

CHARLIE

To Lex’s room.

The pounding on a door off stage.

ANXIETY 1

You should get that.

A blue spotlight turns on over LEX’S bed, stage right.

CHARLIE crawls in next to her roommate.

                                                                    LEX

Huh, Charlie what’s going on?

CHARLIE

Someone is pounding on our door.

ANXIETY 1 sits at the end of the bed.

ANXIETY 1

Remember when you sister’s boyfriend invited himself over?

CHARLIE

(To LEX)

Can you check the door?

LEX

I didn’t hear anything Charlie, just go to sleep.

ANXIETY 1

And he brought his friends?

The spotlight fades, then shuts off.

END OF SCENE

                                                          ACT 1 SCENE 2

Lights, on a sofa, center stage.

CHARLIE has school books open in her lap, she’s studying for a test. ANXIETY 1 is sitting on the couch next to her.

                                                              ANXIETY 1

Test coming up?

CHARLIE

Chemistry.

ANXIETY 1

Don’t you have a paper due Friday?

CHARLIE

Yes, but the test is tomorrow, Friday is two days away. Plus, I already wrote the first page.

ANXIETY 1

What about Tommy?

CHARLIE
What about him?

ANXIETY 1

He’s probably feeling lonely, you’ve been studying for the test every day. You’re going to fail anyway.

CHARLIE

Tommy’s fine, he has soccer practice and his own homework. We have a date this Saturday.

ANXIETY 1 hands CHARLIE her phone.

They then take the book from CHARLIE’s lap and sets it on the floor. CHALIE calls TOMMY.

The light fades slowly to blue. CHARLIE hangs up the phone.

ANXIETY 1 is asleep.

CHARLIE kicks them awake.

ANXIETY 1

Mm, what time is it?

CHARLIE

Midnight, I have no time to study now.

ANXIETY 1

Maybe you shouldn’t have called Tommy.

CHARLIE

You told me to!

ANXIETY 1

I am you; everything you do is you. Don’t go blaming others for your actions Charlie.

CHARLIE angrily stalks off, exits stage right.

ANXIETY 1 stretches out on the sofa and waves at the audience.

ANXIETY 1

Mind turning the light off?

                                    The lights turn off.

                                                          END OF SCENE

ACT 1 SCENE 3

Spotlight on the couch. CHARLIE and TOMMY are on the couch, studying.

ANXIETY 1 is perched on the arm of the couch.

TOMMY

Everything okay? You seem tense.

CHARLIE

Someone was pounding on our door last night.

TOMMY

You should have called me. I could’ve come over.

CHARLIE

(To TOMMY)

It’s fine, I stayed with Lex.

ANXIETY 1

Picked Lex over Tommy, wonder how that makes him feel.

TOMMY

Do you need a night to yourself Charlie? We can cancel our date if we need to.

A spotlight shines only on CHARLIE and ANXIETY 1 and ANXIETY 2. TOMMY needs to stay still, as if frozen in time.

ANXIETY 2 emerges from behind the couch. ANXIETY 1 and ANXIETY 2 work off each other, sometimes their words overlap.

It should be overwhelming and loud.

ANXIETY 1

He’s canceling your date. Isn’t it your six-month anniversary? Must feel pretty bad.

ANXIETY 2

He’s annoyed by you.

ANXIETY 1

He’s only dating you because he feels sorry for you.

ANXIETY 2

Maybe your sister was right when she said you can’t have a healthy relationship.

CHARLIE

Stop. She’s been saying that my whole life. It’s not true.

ANXIETY 2

Remember last week when she went off on you for being a bad sister?

ANXIETY 1

A break up, just what you need on top of finals.

ANXIETY 2

You shouldn’t even try relationships. They only end bad and nothing good comes out of them. They just make us worse.

ANXIETY 1

Is your head pounding yet Charlie?

Light on the whole couch, TOMMY IS BACK. TOMMY turns to her and holds her hands. ANXIETY 1 and 2 are perched on the back of the couch.

TOMMY

My brother’s flying in from Utah this weekend and I have to drive out to my parents’ house. I’m sorry I have to cancel the date this weekend. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.

CHARLIE

Oh, that’s fine Tommy. Lex has been annoying me about spending time with her any ways. Plus, finals are next week.

TOMMY kisses her cheek and packs his backpack.

                                                                 TOMMY

I’ve got to go; the guys are heading to the bar tonight and I’m the taxi. But I’ll see you later. If there’s more knocking tonight call me.

TOMMY exits stage right.

ANXIETY 1 and ANXIETY 2 sit next to her on the couch. As they talk CHALIE’S head should be sinking into her hands and she needs to grip her hair as if she has a migraine.

ANXIETY 1

What if his brother isn’t really in town?

ANXIETY 2

And he’s really seeing that girl from his history class?

ANXIETY 1

The one that’s always asking for his notes.

ANXIETY 2

And who he eats lunch with every day.

CHARLIE

I’m pretty sure she’s a lesbian.

ANXIETY 1

But can you be sure of that?

                                    CHARLIE covers up her ears.

                                                              ANXIETY 2

Charlie you can’t block us out.

ANXIETY 1

He canceled the date because he doesn’t want to see you.

ANXIETY 2

I wouldn’t want to spend any more time with you if I had to but I’m forced to be here.

Charlie SCREAMS.

She lifts her head up and has tears running down her face. Her chest is heaving and she can’t catch a breath.

LEX runs in. She sits down next to CHARLIE and hugs her. She is trying desperately to get CHARLIE out of the panic attack she’s having.

CHARLIE is crying and shaking, she is having an out of body experience. She’s scratching at her arms harshly and dry heaving.

LEX

Char, what’s going on? Tell me, what’s happening?

CHARLIE

I can’t Lex.

LEX
What can I do?

CHARLIE

Just stay here.

LEX nods and holds her close.

They need to stay there for a minute, just the silence and both girls holding each other. It needs to be silent and there should be nothing to distract the audience.

CHARLIE manages to calm down.

LEX

What happened Charlie? Do I need to kick Tommy’s ass?

CHARLIE

Do you think he’s cheating on me?

LEX

No. That boy loves you. And who the hell would he cheat on you with? He’s only friends with guys.

CHARLIE

That girl in his history class. He’s doing a group project with her.

LEX

(BEAT)

Wait, you mean Sarah Mills?

CHARLIE

I think that’s her name. He seemed real’ fond of her when he talked about her last week.

LEX

Sarah Mills who has been in a relationship with the same girl for five years Sarah Mills?

CHARLIE

So she is a lesbian.

LEX

You need to stop overthinking things.

CHARLIE

I wish I could.

LEX runs her hands up and down CHARLIE’S arms.

LEX

What else is going on? You’ve been so anxious lately.

CHARLIE

Was someone trying to break in last night?

LEX

Charlie, I honestly think it was the neighbors. Our neighbors are frat boys, you know how they are.

                                    CHARLIE nods.

LEX (CONT’D)

Do you need anything?

CHARLIE

Just a glass of water.

LEX and ANXETY 2 leave stage right.

                                                      CHARLIE (CONT’D)

How dare you!

ANXIETY 1

What?

CHARLIE

You made me have an anxiety attack.

ANXIETY 1

I didn’t do anything, you did.

CHARLIE

I wouldn’t have to deal with this if it weren’t for you. I wouldn’t have to be constantly living in fear, waiting for my next attack. They make me feel like shit.

ANXIETY 1

That’s because you are shit.

CHARLIE

(Yells) Stop!

                                    LEX enters stage right.

CHARLIE takes the water LEX offers.

LEX

Do you need anything else? I’m making dinner tonight, any requests?

CHARLIE

I’m fine, just need some time to myself. And anything sounds good.

                                    LEX leaves stage right.

ANIXETY 1

Don’t blame me for your anxiety attacks. Maybe if you went to a therapist you could fix it.

CHARLIE

I don’t like the way they make me feel.

ANXIETY 1

Complain more will ya?

CHARLIE

I always leave their office crying.

ANXIETY 1

What? And that’s better than how you’re currently handling it?

CHARLIE

Maybe if you would leave me alone for five minutes.

ANXIETY 1

Can’t do that.

CHARLIE

Why not?

ANXIETY 1

I’ve been with you since you were a child, ever since your sister was old enough to babysit. There’s nothing you can do now, you’re stuck with me.

CHARLIE

I hate you.

ANXIETY 1

Now, that’s not very nice.

CHARLIE

I’m going to bed.

ANXIETY 1

Good night darling, see you in the morning. Don’t forget to check the locks!

CHARLIE exits stage left.

ANXIETY 1 stands in the spot light for a moment before exiting stage left. The lights go out.
